Beirut marches on its stomach

Beirut. 10 pm.

The Security Council has just shrugged it's shoulders.
Israeli dude gave us a Jerry Maguire "help me help you" speech.
Nasrallah has just declared 'open war' (as opposed to the closed one we've been thoroughly enjoying?)
Hezbollah has just struck an Israeli warship off the coast.
The night sky will surely be lit soon.
Tracer rounds and plumes of fire.

And the Lebanese?

They are eating.

I'm not sure if this is ridiculous or admirable.
I know however that it is most definitely and uniquely, Lebanese.
You only get this cool about war when your capital was once used as a synonym for total chaos.
And that image is rapidly returning.

I hate war.
I hate it more when it's avoidable.
I hate it even more when it's not my nation's doing.

Tomorrow innocent people will die. Again.
Tomorrow more of Lebanon will go up in flames.
But tonight?

Tonight, we eat.

What are they eating? Enquiring minds want to know.

Seriously, because my cousins are holed up in Mieh-Mieh, and my stateside cousin who lived through the Syrian siege of Saida just told me that they would probably live on bread they make from flour they store, olives, za'atar, and whatever is in their gardens. So this is what they're doing in the villages. What are people eating in Beirut?

Thank God there's still food. I am very concerned about food and water for everyone, especially in the Southern cities, Saida and Sur.

Be strong and be safe!
what is going on is horrifying but please explain me I really want to understand :what else Israel can do to protect itself against the enemy who denies the very right on existence and cowardly hiding itself between civilians? ?

This is the equivelent to the English 'stiff upper lip' during the bombing of London. It actually shows an admirable personal strength in a people, as crazy as it seems.

It is indeed a tragedy that your log-suffering people are caught in the middle. Stay safe.

But it is your nations doing. By not reining in the terrorist activities of Hisbollah you forced Israel to do it for you. Next time keep your nutbars on a shorter leash.

Beirut thankfully is far from running out of supplies, but what it must be like further south I shudder to think. So these guys were having what they always have, manouchet zaatar from Ghalayini's ...

Hmmm... I guess that makes it comfort food for thought?

Lets not get into political debates, I really don't have the time nor the patience to dig into history. The situation is too complex and the details are too subtle to wrap it up in a blog comment.

Thanks, I will. And I'll be at that fast food counter again tonight for sure.

I think we have much more in common than not. It's the land... it shapes you in it's own image.
