The Smurf Wars

You can't make these things up!

Some genius at the Belgian offices of UNICEF, a children's fund that is part of the UN, thought that the best way to shock a complacent public into backing its fund-raising efforts for ex-child soldiers in Africa is to bomb the smurfs into oblivion.

Carpet bombing of the smurf mushroom village leaves Smurfette dead and Baby Smurf orphaned and crying.

The office reports that this campaign has yielded increased interest and donations compared to the traditional advertisements they ran before.

I guess real images of crying children just don't cut it anymore...

What trauma this cartoon would inflict to children viewers who are not in war zones? I guess they didn't think of that much.

Just a bit of extra information, the owners of the smurf brand and UNICEF agreed that the spot would not be run before 9pm, specifically so that kids wouldn't see it. Of course, if it's playing on the news at who know what hour of the day, that precaution isn't really going to help.
